CROATIAN CHARACTERS AND PRONUNCIATION

The Croatian language consists of the following alphabet characters which are pronounced as shown below. Note that there is no Q, W, X, or Y. Note that some characters have diacritical accent marks on top or side or are peculiar to the Croatian language. These are shown in the color red. In the Croatian language every letter is pronounced; there are no silent letters as in English.

A: Like the 'a' in 'father'
B: Like the 'b' in 'book'.
C: Like the 'ts' in 'cats'.
Č: Like the 'ch' in 'cheap'.
Ć: Like the 'ch' in 'cheap'. It is hard to distinguish Č and Ć.
D: Like the 'd' in 'day'.
DŽ Like the 'j' in 'jam'.
Đ: Like the 'dg' in 'bridge'.
E: Like the 'e' in 'bed' or 'men'.
F: Like the 'f' in 'father'.
G: Like the 'g' in 'get'.
H: Like the 'h' in 'hot'.
I: Like the 'e' in 'she' or 'we'.
J: Like the 'y' in 'yellow'.
K: Like the 'k' in 'king'.
L: Like the 'l' in 'look'.
LJ Like the 'll' in 'million'.
M: Like the 'm' in 'most'.
N: Like the 'n' in 'night'.
NJ: Like the 'n' in 'news'.
O: Like the 'o' in 'know'.
P: Like the 'p' in 'pit'.
R: Like the 'r' in 'run' with some vibration as in Spanish.
S: Like the 's' in 'sir'.
Š: Like the 'sh' in 'shoe'.
T: Like the 't' in 'to'.
U: Like the 'oo' in 'room'.
V: Like the 'v' in 'vast'.
Z: Like the 'z' in 'zip'.
Ž: Like the 's' in 'measure'.
